Praise for Praise Baby
"The Praise Baby Collection: Music For Baby's Spirit And Mind is the highly acclaimed and first developmentally appropriate CD, DVD and video series that creates a nurturing environment for your baby's spiritual and intellectual development."
“We all love the music that is on the Praise Baby CD… It’s also perfect for the parents. Some days the only praise and worship time I get is while listening to a Praise Baby CD, or watching a Praise Baby DVD. It is so refreshing to my spirit to spend that time renewing my mind and soul, even with kids in the car, or while doing the dishes.”
“The soft, simple lyrics and the soothing composition of the music create a calm and reassuring atmosphere for babies and toddlers, or tired moms and dads… Playing any one of these DVDs will transform the feeling of the home or other environment where children are, and bring them and their caregivers to a place that is quiet and peaceful.”
A famous studied once proved that pot plants that were continuously played classical music grew faster and healthier then plants exposed to Metallica. But did you know the same is true from your baby?
Studies have shown that music is an important stimulant in the development of your baby’s social, physical and cognitive skills. Intrigued – then read on.
WHAT DOES THE RESEARCH SAY:
Researchers from Brigham Young University studied the effect of playing lullabies to premature babies in a prenatal care unit. For 40 minutes a day cassettes players filled the babies’ incubators with lullabies sung by men and women over a four days period. The results were staggering, showing the babies who listened to the music gained more weight, had a lower blood pressure and a stronger heart beat.
Another experiment compared a group of babies who actively engaged in interactive musical activity compare to babies who only listened to music. The musical babies learned a small set of lullabies, nursery rhymes and songs with actions. Parents and infants learnt together, playing percussion instruments, taking turns and singing songs. The other group simply played while listening to ‘Baby Einstein’, a popular recording among parents.
The results were conclusive: after six months the babies from the interactive classes showed better early communication skills (like pointing at objects that are out of reach, or waving goodbye). Plus socially these babies smiled more, were easier to soothe, and showed less distress when something was different.
So what’s going on inside a baby’s brain that causes this increased development?
A BABY’S BRAIN:
Researchers have proven that music creates new pathways in the developing brain.
A newborn baby has billions of unconnected brains cells. Within the first years of life these brain cells begin to connect together like magnets, creating pathways. These pathways are the brains way of thinking faster and more efficiently, making movement and thinking easier (like kicking a ball for example, or smiling). We all created pathways for basic movements and thought in our baby years.
Babies who grow up listening to music develop strong music-related connections. These music connections have been proven to support thinking process. Classical music can improve spatial reasoning, while learning an instrument significantly improves your thinking skills. Before babies can walk and talk, they can recognise, benefit from and enjoy music.
SO HOW SHOULD I USE MUSIC:
Imagine your family’s life as a film that needs a soundtrack (and the TV is the villain)!
Sing in the bath tub to ‘Yellow Submarine’, dance in the living room to Michael Bable, and snuggle up on the sofa to The Sound of Music. When songs are playing all the time your baby’s interest in music will grow, as will their musical ear when the time comes to learn an instrument. Playing the Praise Baby CD’s also adds an extra element to the mix, with worship music that will benefit you as well as help your baby to recognise the songs in church.
It’s important to stress, music isn’t the only stimulate important for healthy development. Parents are meant to interact with their babies to develop an area that’s arguably more important, social skills. Playing with your baby and keeping them engaged with social activities is vital. Music is great, but it certainly isn’t the be all and end all.
If your goal is to mould the next Beethoven, pay for piano listens. If your goal is to nurture a love for music, praise and God then the Praise Baby Collection is the perfect tool. But most of all – remember to have fun!
Every family used to have its own 'going on holiday' sound track. Now, in these days of i-pods and mobile devices, that music will be a mix of personal choices concocted by individual family members rather than by the family as a whole. With individual devices and personal listening gear, it might not even be a family experience, with each traveller enjoying their own music to the exclusion of everyone else’s.
Before then it was the car CD player that was the source of all music. And before that the cassette tape. Both permitted a mix of music to be prepared at home before departure, although each allowed for the purchase of something new just for the trip. Back in the days when in-car entertainment poverty was widespread, driver and passengers relied on the radio with music choices made by DJs and presenters beyond the family circle. And before that, in the prehistoric days of family motoring, music had to be created; live, loud and on the move.
The family soundtrack might be a thing of the past. No doubt you can remember your own; singing it together without accompaniment, or joining in with a radio broadcast, cassette tape or CD. The song was probably innocent and childlike with easy words and a catchy tune. A quick poll around the office turned up family favourites: ‘Nellie The Elephant’, ‘How Much Is That Doggie’, ‘Old MacDonald’, 'Sparky's Magic Piano' and The Smurfs – as popular holiday songs. No one offered to sing them now.
But if you’re looking to restart your own in-car family singing tradition on your next holiday trip, Praise Baby’s ‘Praises and Smiles’ Collection will give you all you need to become the next Von Trapps of the British and European motorway network. The CD – the one with the green bird on it, gives you child-friendly arrangements of grown-up worship songs including ‘Open The Eyes Of My Heart’, ‘Lord, I Lift Your Name On High’, ‘Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee’ and ‘Shout To The Lord’.
With the Praise Baby deluxe edition, you even get the ‘Praises and Smiles’ DVD with the 10 songs supported with colourful animation and real life images of children smiling and praising God. Great for enertaining in the home – and even in the back of the car, though maybe not recommended for the driver. The musical arrangements are all gentle and soothing with the added bonus that they're likely to send your 0 to 3 year olds off to sleep leaving you free of having to play it for the whole journey, or just free to sing away on your own to your heart’s content. – Les Ellison
