In the Beginning: The Story of the King James Bible
Full Product Description
There are many layers to the story of how the King James Bible came to be written...who better than Christian theologian Alister McGrath to provide you with a comprehensive guide to the epic story?
McGrath superbly lays foundations for the reader to develop a full understanding of the King James Bible. The story begins in the 15th Century with the origin of printing. You will then learn of political and technical problems that surrounded different versions of the Bible and how the King James Bible dealt with these issues.
The King James Bible's influence is arguably the most fascinating element of the story. For example, McGrath argues that without it, great literary works such as Paradise Lost and Pilgrim's Progress would not exist.
"In the Beginning: The Story of the King James Bible" will explore how the translation has exerted a long lasting religious, social, economic and political influence.

Alistair McGrath wrote this when he was Professor of Historical Theology at Oxford University. In this book, he used this knowledge to write an easily read but detailed account of the historical background, that lead to the translation, printing and distribution of the version of the Bible authorised by King James for use throughout his kingdom. The reader is introduced to life where knowledge of the bible was restricted to those who read Latin and spoke French, and what they chose to tell their English-speaking brethren. It was not only that printing became available at this time, but the wider acceptance of English as the language spoken throughout the land. A fascinating account, that put many things into perspective for me.
