If you are looking for a guide to the healing ministry, this is not the book for you, try the authors' other joint publication, The Essential Guide to Healing instead. However, if you want to be inspired, encouraged and mentored in you own healing ministry, then this is the book for you.
Bill has thirty-seven years of ministry behind him and Randy has forty and each has a global healing ministry bearing prodigious fruit. Yet they are both searingly honest and humble in the way in which they share their struggles and failures. This results in a very 'real' and empowering tool which is accessible to all.
Their chosen format is that of an interview, each interviewing the other, and was originally intended as a DVD project to help train people in the healing ministry. As a result, reading this book is rather like being the fly on the wall as two old friends share the many aspects of their years in the healing ministry.
For me, one of the most helpful and empowering aspects of this book was the fresh insight it gave me on the place of faith in the healing ministry. To quote Bill, (p. 87)
"In some ways, faith that moves mountains is not what you believe God can do, it's what you expect he's about to do."
Healing Unplugged not only inspired, empowered and mentored me, it also took me on a spiritual journey as I believe it will all those who read it with a heart open to the Lord.

Reading it is like sitting in on a discussion between two veterans in the healing ministry as they talk over very real questions based on what they have actually experienced. This is as close as you can get to being personally mentored by Bill and Randy, who are very honest and creative in trying to answer questions on how best to pray for healing.” – Francis MacNutt, co-founder of Christian Healing Ministries.
Eden Article: What You Should Know About 'Healing Unplugged'
The Christian marketplace is cluttered with healing ministry books. Do we need another? Will this one really tell us anything different? Is this one actually worth buying? Here is all the information about the book so you can make up your own mind.
Why Has This Book Been Written?:
Randy Clark was initially interviewing twelve leaders of healing ministries for a Christian Healing Certificate Program he was developing as an online course. Having been close friends for 14 years, Bill Johnson was an obvious choice. Between busy schedules and conferences, the two leaders interviewed each other.
Randy interviewed Bill at Voice of the Apostles conference in October 2010 between the early hours of 11:30pm – 1:30am. Bill interviewed Randy at his School of Healing and Impartation conference in November 2010 at an equally late hour. Randy felt so strongly that the interviews were meant for more that he rang Jane Campbell of Chosen Books and pitched them as a book. She agreed. And so this book is the result of their determined efforts.
What Can You Find Inside The Book?
Technically, this is not a book. It’s an edited transcript.
I am writing this article (and editing as I go along) but ‘Healing Unplugged’ are two interviews which have been transformed into a book by an editor at Chosen Books. This means it doesn’t read like a book, it read more like you are listening to a conversation. It’s in the first person, making everything sound honest and off-the-cuff, with a sense that you’re the interviewer sitting opposite them.
The book (or interview transcript) is split into 2 sections. In the first part Randy interviews Bill and in the second part they swap sits. Randy explains in the introduction the nature of the questions asked neatly fit into five areas:
1. What is your story? How were you called into the healing ministry and what major events or experiences have been part of your call?
2. How have you grown in the area of healing and miracles, and what have you learned?
3. Have you experienced any breakthrough events that caused you to see an increase in healing?
4. How have you developed your ability to see and/or hear in the Spirit?
5. Would you share with me the four or five greatest stories of miraculous healings or deliverances you have experienced?
How Will This Book Help You?:
Many healing books try to be teachers, guides or gurus. They give you goals, telling you to do things and be things and study things and pray things and so on.
‘Healing Unplugged’ is a refreshing change. There is no ‘teaching’ agenda what-so-ever, just two guys who love God reminiscing over their ministry and personal lives. This conversational style is incredibly readable; it engages you through real life experience. Reading Clark’s words when he prayed for a paralysed man or Bill’s experiences in the beginning are powerful.
Before you know it, you’ve learnt a ton of stuff just by re-reading what they told each other. It’s learning through sharpening – iron sharpens iron. You learn from their mistakes and successes. It’s putting Proverbs into practice. “As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another” - Proverbs 27:17.
Who Is This Book For?:
As this book doesn’t pretend to be anything but useful advice, we recommend that it’s more than suitable for anyone interested in healing. ‘Healing Unplugged’ may seem, on the outside, a little wishy-washy with page after page of inspirational drivel, but with every interesting story comes some helpful advice or insight. It’s food for your mind and your soul (plus its only 176 pages so it’s no Bible commentary).
Whether you lead or are involved in a healing ministry or you’re just curious, Bill and Randy are not only important voices to be heard, they are valuable treasure chests of experience. They have opened the treasure chest ... and published it for the world to listen in.
Eden Article: Some Want To Heal, Some Want To Be Healers. Everyone Needs To Know More
Interest in spiritual healing is going to come from one of two directions. Either you want it or you want to give it. This book supposes there’s a third type of person with an interest in spiritual healing – the kind of person who wants to know more about the process and about the people. This third kind of person wants to understand the other two kinds: the healers and the healed.
Bill Johnson and Randy Clark should be known names to anyone interested in spiritual healing in the first two ‘actively involved’ groups. But the truth is their probably not well known to this third group, probably because this third group mostly includes sceptics who feel no need to understand a subject in order to be sceptical about it. Healing Unplugged is a call to spiritual healing sceptics to get some knowledge behind their opinions.
To help the process here’s a bit about the authors. If you’re going to be sceptical – or positive about the subject of spiritual healing, you should be able to talk knowledgeably about who they are, where they come from and what they’re doing.
RANDY CLARK (GLOBAL AWAKENING)
The son of an oil-worker, Randy Clark grew up in a fundamentalist Baptist Church and traces his relationship with God back to a miraculous recovery following a car accident in 1970, aged 18. Feeling himself called to fulltime ministry he graduated with a B.S. in Religious Studies from Oakland City College, Indiana and a Master of Divinity from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Kentucky. Randy is currently pursuing his doctorate at United Theological Seminary.
Mentored by John Wimber, charismatic co-founder of the Vineyard movement, Randy endured his “desert experience” until in 1993, he attended a Howard-Browne conference in Tulsa. Here he witnessed a worshipper fall “under the power of the Spirit” lie on the floor for and laugh uncontrollable for 45 minutes. Word quickly spread in Vineyard circles and Randy was invited to speak about it at regional and national meetings. He was then invited to speak in Canada.
Walking into a small storefront church near the Toronto airport on January 20 1994, the controversial events and impact of the gatherings held there have become known worldwide as the Toronto Blessing.
Now an internationally renowned writer and speaker with more than 30 years of pastoral experience, Randy’s Global Awakening Ministry aims to spread the Toronto style spiritual revival worldwide and includes a school for Christian Healing, which includes an NVQ style certification programme.
BILL JOHNSON (BETHEL CHURCH)
Senior pastor of 2,000 strong Bethel Church, Redding California Bill is also a protégée of John Wimber and the Vineyard movement who introduced the then pastor at Weaverville to spiritual healing and, in 1995, the Toronto Blessing style revivalism. It was experience, says Bill that decided him: 'I am going to give the rest of my life to this.'
In February 1996, after 17 years at Weaverville Bill and his wife, Brenda, were invited to become senior pastors of Bethel. In "Face to Face with God", one of Bill’s many books Bethel is, "A church where supernatural encounters with God happen regularly and miracles are common.” The World Faith Movement is the Johnson’s equivalent of Clark’s Global Awakening Ministry.
Again, like Randy, Bill Johnson promotes the ministry of supernatural healing through training and certification. The Bethel School of Supernatural Ministry has 1,200 students from 370 countries training to become the next generation of global revivalists equipped and deployed for worldwide transformation.
Perhaps signing up to the fulltime courses promoted by both schools asks more than you want to invest in finding out more about spiritual healing. But this little book ‘Healing Unplugged’ will give you an insight into the subject in the company of two of its most active, experienced and enthusiastic protagonists. They might or might not change your mind, but you’ll be holding a much better informed opinion. - Les Ellison
