Full Product Description

Courageous is the best-selling inspirational movie with a solid faith affirming storyline that recognises the need for strong father figures in families, church communities and the nations. In this family movie with a Christian heart, Courageous Police officers Adam Mitchell, Nathan Hayes, David Thomson, and Shane Fuller are daily called to give their all serving and protecting the community.

In their tough day jobs, the officers are confident and focused. They can give their best at work, but at home they’re finding it hard to make the grade. A sudden turn of events leaves the men shell-shocked, left to wrestle with their fears and failings. Risking their lives everyday, the cops realise there’s a common need in the no-hope gang members who roam the city streets. The need of strong a male role-model, an example to live the Christian life – a loving Christian father.

The need to serve and protect is now much closer to home. What will they do: stay in the comfort zone or show real courage and take up what it means to be real father.

From the makers of Fireproof – the action drama focused on ‘fireproofing’ marriage and the family, Courageous concentrates on fatherhood and the vital role of men with courage in Christ. Courageous is the fourth film from Sherwood Pictures, filmed on location in Albany, Georgia.

This DVD is Region 2 and will play on a UK DVD player, with a running time of 129 minutes.

Subtitles on the DVD are Danish, English UK, French, Finnish, German, Greek, Italian, Norwegian, Polish, Spanish Castilian, Swedish and Ukrainian.

Courageous DVD by Sherwood Pictures was published by Provident in February 2012 and is our 88th best seller. The ISBN for Courageous DVD is 602341005494.

After hearing a lot about this movie and the impact that it had in America I wasn’t sure what to expect but after the huge success of Fireproof I was keen to see it for myself. Beginning with an intense action scene in a petrol station I knew it was likely I would enjoy this film. I’m pleased to say I really did. The characters and their life situations, particularly the family relationships were heart-warming and yes at times did make me begin to well up. I was gripped from the start. The Christian values played out in the film were encouraging and due to the popularity of the film have affected the audience across both sides of the pond. I would recommend this film for teens and adults to inspire and entertain in equal measure, this film puts Christian movies on the map!

There are some people who cringe at the thought of mixing Christianity and the glamour of the film industry, for more than one reason. But a church in Albany have certainly been busy proving cynics wrong – and with powerful results too.
Courageous is soaked in metaphor and parallels. Watch it the first time and you’ll be struck by the power of a loving father. Watch it again and you might notice how God’s fatherly hand is over all his children. Then watch it with your children after a hard days work and you’ll be given fresh perspective, a new set of eyes on parenting and the urge to make a life-changing oath.
For me, a young man on the brink of marriage, Courageous hit me between the eyes and made my throat dry up. I learnt that when that amazing day comes, when a child will call me dad, the courage I’ll need doesn’t come shrink wrapped. Parenting is a gift, the Christian life is tough and God is faithful.
Yes, this film is very American but don’t let that put you off. The script writers certainly deserve a pat on the back as the film draws you into the action, makes you cry with the characters and smile at moments of shared joy. Whatever your prejudgements of Christian films, let this film be the one that wins your heart and inspires you to walk closer with God.

Tight edits, fast cuts and sensitive moments give Courageous its pace, focus and meaning.’
Ever since Anne Voase Coates won the Oscar for her work on David Lean’s Lawrence of Arabia, I’ve become a fan of finely cut and edited movies. It’s the editing that gives a film's story its pace and focus. To make Courageous, Sherwood’s editors had to cut 130 hours of raw Atlanta streets footage down to 90 minutes of engaging action and meaning.
For example, in the movie’s opener, Nathan (Ken Bevel) gives chase when his truck is stolen. There are 21 cuts setting the scene in the sleepy gas station, and another 51 in the traffic scene that follows. All of this to make a sequence that takes less than 2 minutes to watch.
Tight edits, fast cuts and the sensitivity to let emotional moments linger, set Courageous above previous faith based movies. Just as Anne Voase Coates (who started out editing devotional shorts for religious films) raised the bar for mainstream movies, so Courageous sets a new standard for Christian film makers.

Courageous isn't the first Christian film that I was looking forward to watching, it was however the one I've had the highest expectations of so far.  The nature of my job meant that I was hearing about this film long before it made it to the cutting room floor. Having seen the progression of Sherwood Pictures productions I was excited and concerned in equal measure, would Courageous live up to the hype? I'm sat down to review the film through the lens of not only knowing where it comes from -  Christian Church produced with a clear message, but also as someone comparing like for like, I see alot of Christian movies so I was prepared to compare it with others that I've seen.  Courageous may have changed the way I watch Christian films in the future.
The storyline and script delivered the high level that I've come to expect after seeing films such as Fireproof but when it came to cinematography Courageous pulled the 'Christian film' rug out from under me in a way I didn't expect.  I forgot I was watching something produced by a Baptist Church in Georgia and began to compare it with films from much larger studios with much deeper pockets.  This film was the highest grossing independent film of 2011 for good reason, it gives its audience more than just a great story, it's a great experience and I can't wait to see what the Kendrick Brothers do next.

Fantastic Film!
- Becky, film lover, in Nottingham
One minute I was crying, the next I was laughing hysterically! It really is a powerful, emotional film. I think the overall message is true, many fathers don't take there role seriously and I would especially recommend any father to watch this film. However, I would also recommend this film to a friend because it's just fantastic.

Another badly made Christian film
- James, film fanatic, London
Why is it that Christian films have such poor scripts? The idea behind this film is good but the realisation of this idea is very poor. The acting is very wooden and slow. The dialogue is very boring and I forced myself to watch the film through. The film is called Courageous and is marketed is an action film. There are two action scenes; the opening seen (which is full or promise) and one of the final scenes where there is a shoot out. Other than this there is no action at all and the film centres around some rather boring characters. I realise the film makers are trying to represent real life but this does not make for a good film. I cannot recommend this film. I've seen Fireproof and Facing The Giants, both produced by the same team and they are not great films but they are way better than this. My advice is to wait for Spielberg's epic about Moses (working title Of Gods And Kings). Stuart Hazledine is the scriptwriter and he is a strong Christian. It will blow all these other Christian films out of the water. I hope that one day, the Christian movie scene will at least measure up to the production standards of the secular movie industry. It's not about money. Many excellent secular films have been made on a shoestring budget; Stuart Hazledine's EXAM being a case in point. But somehow I find it hard to believe that the Christian film industry will manage this.

Great film with a powerful message
- Ian, Southampton
A great film with a powerful message, also portrays the seedier side of being a police officer with plenty of action to keep unsaved people glued to the TV! Fine to give away to teens and adults but not for children due to some violence. Will make fathers things seriously about thier roles but great for encouraging family values too. As a single person I found this film refreshing with a positive and clear message.

Honour Begins at Home - four men, one calling: To serve and protect. As law enforcement officers, Adam Mitchell, Nathan Hayes, David Thomson, and Shane Fuller are confident and focused. Protecting the streets is second nature to these men.

Yet at the end of the day, they face a challenge that none of them are truly prepared to tackle: fatherhood.

While they consistently give their best on the job, good enough seems to be all they can muster as dads. But they're quickly discovering that their standard is missing the mark. When tragedy hits home, these men are left wrestling with their hopes, their fears, their faith, and their fathering. Can a newfound urgency help these dads draw closer to God ... and to their children?

Filled with action-packed police drama, COURAGEOUS is the fourth film from Sherwood Pictures, the moviemaking ministry of Sherwood Baptist Church in Albany, Georgia. Viewers will once again find themselves laughing, crying, and cheering as they are challenged and inspired by everyday heroes who long to be the kinds of dads that make a lifelong impact on their children. Raising their children in a God-honouring way – that's courageous.

Courageous is rated 12 and has a running time of 129 minutes. This DVD is Region 2 and will play on a UK DVD player.

Subtitles on the DVD are Danish, English UK, French, Finnish, German, Greek, Italian, Norwegian, Polish, Spanish Castilian, Swedish and Ukrainian.

Endorsements

The Hollywood Reporter

“Courageous reveals the duo’s [Kendrick brothers] growing expertise as filmmakers with its skilful blending of moving drama, subtle comedy and several impressive action sequences, including a well-staged foot chase and a harrowing shootout between the cops and bad guys.”

“The characters are complex and well-drawn, struggling with various personal issues that test their faith and character in believable ways.”

“…the generous laughter, cheers and applause generated by the crowd at an opening day screening demonstrate that these enterprising Baptist filmmakers clearly know their audience.”

Viewers praise for Courageous

“Absolutely loved it. Realistic, i.e. lacking Hollywood-style 30 car blow ups and stupid special effects. Simply realistic. Has humour, actually very good humour, not even close to modern toilet style comedies…”

“A must see movie for all families to see together and to grow in faith and always put God first in their lives. I cried through most of the movie because it really can hit home with everyone and let's us all see we do fall short of God's will for us as families and Christians…”

“This is a must-see movie. Families need to take back their important role of rearing children - especially fathers. This is a great call to action for dads everywhere to stand up and be accountable.”

Sherwood Pictures: courageous, faith inspired movie makers

To most people’s surprise, the movie makers behind recent big success ‘Courageous’ and 2008 hit ‘Fireproof’, are not a huge Hollywood studio or a commercial TV giant. The creators are among a new wave of independent film producers with a heart and a message. Sherwood Pictures is an adventurous outreach initiative of Sherwood Baptist Church, Albany, Georgia. Concerned that church was sliding down the scale of popularity, the leadership team looked around for new opportunities to get the Christian message into the mainstream.

Sherwood’s leaders realised that, for most people, spending time in church was way less important than sport events, education and movie going. With the mindset that it was better to address the situation than complain about it, Sherwood set about the development of a triple barrelled outreach programme: The Sports Park, Sherwood Christian Academy and Sherwood Pictures.

How It All Began

In 2001 Sherwood’s leadership team we went off on retreat to Orlando, Florida but took a day out to visit Disney World. Observing the attention to detail everywhere, they were challenged to think that if a secular company can be this committed to excellence, why can’t the church of Jesus Christ?

In 2002, associate pastor Alex Kendrick founded Sherwood Pictures with $20,000 in donations and a team of visionary volunteers bolstered with a handful of industry professionals. Picking up steam in 2003, the company released its first feature length film, ‘Flywheel.

The simple script about life change in a dishonest car salesman was written by Alex Kendrick and his brother Stephen. With the $20,000 raised from church members they bought a digital camera, boom mike and some lights from Home Depot. 60 church volunteers made up the cast and crew and filming went ahead in the evenings with the cameras running ‘dolly tracks’ made of PVC drainpipe.

‘Facing the Giants’ followed in 2006, and in 2008 Sherwood Pictures released ‘Fireproof’ – passing even Hollywood’s new releases the highest-grossing independent film of the year.

Courageous The Box Office Hit

Sherwood’s latest movie, ‘Courageous’, is a police action drama that explores vital roles of fatherhood in family, church and community. The new movie presents men with the opportunity to step up and take back their responsibilities of husband and father.

Filmed in seven weeks of April-May 2010, Sherwood Pictures have much in common with Calvary Pictures, with their church base in Memphis, Tennessee, and the makers of ‘The Grace Card’. Sherwood used Calvary Pictures using as the model for their work. Both churches rely heavily on the practical, financial and prayerful support of their visionary home church.

‘Courageous’ is filmed in Sherwood’s home town of Albany, Georgia some of it actually in the church where the congregation's 3,000 members gather to sing and pray. - Les Ellison

Courageous Resolution for Men in Family, Church and Community

Continuing the life changing impact of the hit movie Courageous, the producers have linked the films themes to ‘The Resolution for Men’: A book, programme and study course that enables and empowers Christian men, husbands and fathers to take responsibility for their lives, marriage, family, church and community.

Boldly picking up the issues and themes of big screen action movie, ‘Courageous’, ‘The Resolution for Men’ restores the self respect and spirit of responsibility taken away from men in recent years. ‘Courageous’ is the faith inspired police action drama that explores the vital roles of fatherhood in family, church and community that still call out for men of courage in Christ.

Risking their lives everyday, four courageous cops find their toughest call to serve and protect isn’t on the streets, it’s in their own homes. As husbands and fathers they have to make a choice: stay in the comfort zone or show real courage and take up the challenge of what it means to be a father.

‘Courageous’ is a powerful story of strong male leadership and presents men with the opportunity to step up to the challenge of fatherhood in family church and community. The movie is a clear, bold encouragement to men in taking on their responsibilities of home, husband and father.

Calling Men To Be Men

‘The Resolution for Men’ is where men will find the encouragement and inspiration they’ll need if their going to rise to their true calling as men strong in Christ for their own families, church and community.

Taking masculinity back from the bullying chauvinists and self-centred egotists, ‘The Resolution for Men’ equips men to engage as Godly men in marriage, family, church and community. Written jointly by ‘Courageous’  screenwriters Stephen and Alex Kendrick, ‘The Resolution for Men’ stands with men in a world where true manliness has been sidelined.

In ‘The Resolution for Men’, men are given back their right and power to take full responsibility for their wives and children, and to move forward with a bold and clear resolution for their future together. Based on the new film ‘Courageous’ (from the makers of ‘Fireproof’), The Resolution for Men’ is a clear call and guide for men to take full physical, social, and spiritual responsibility as fathers and husbands.

In ‘The Resolution for Men’, men are encouraged to show in themselves the qualities of fatherhood they expect to find in their Father-God. Practical guidance and understanding advice helps them toward becoming a loving provider, a strong protector, a truthful leader, a respectable authority and an intimate friend.

‘The Resolution for Women’ makes the fitting partner to ‘The Resolution for Men’, co-written with Priscilla Shirer. The sister volume inspires wives and mothers to play their part in supporting and energising the new wave of husbands and fathers rediscovering their strength in Christ. - Les Ellison
