It’s almost inevitable that if you set out to create a film or TV hero, it’s the side kick that will steal the limelight. If you try to tell a story about the main character, the minor character’s will story will be the one everyone wants to hear. If you’ve seen the films ‘Madagascar’, ‘Ice Age’ and just about any Disney with a supporting cast of animated animals you’ll l know what I mean. Now the Madagascar penguins have their own movies, everyone knows the nut fixated squirrel from Ice Age, and the spin-off films of loveable creatures from the Disney studios are almost countless. So it’s hardly surprising that Clive and Ian, the hapless explorers from Phil Visher’s ‘What’s in the Bible?’ DVD series, should take to the air with their own adventures in the Wonder Blimp of Knowledge.
Quite why these two characters, especially given the quasi-English credentials should be singled out for fame, is a bit of a mystery. After all, Buch Denver, Sunday School Lady, Pastor Paul, The Bentley Brothers and especially singing cowboy, Chuck Waggin, are much more akin to the American home of the creators Phil Vischer and his Jelly Labs animators. These US origins probably account for Clive and Ian’s outrages parodies of an English accent. Part received English, part mock cockney, part non-localisable American all rolled up in the most baffling inflections and stresses; they are without doubt the worst exponents of spoken English since Dick Van Dyke’s ‘Bert’ in Disney’s ‘Mary Poppins.
Even so, Clive and Ian are the classic double act, ideally suited to the role invented for them by Phil Vischer. Together with their companion ‘Monkey’, who has a rather dodgy accent of his own, they go to places the other ‘What’s in the Bible?’ characters couldn’t realistically reach. Not that ‘realistically’ means much in Phil Vischer’s imagination. The DVD is divided into six bite sized episodes. This makes it ideal not only for entertainment but also for teaching in school or Sunday school, and would even be well received in all age worship settings. The teaching the two friends and brothers extract from the situations they’re sent into is simple enough for children to grasp. At the same time their comments on life, society and 21st century culture will have grown ups laughing too. – Les Ellison
