Taking the middle section of the Apostles' Creed as a framework, the veteran preacher David Pawson explores the essential facts about the Lord Jesus in seven chapters. He covers his birth, death, resurrection, ascension, return and judgement.
The author wrote this book because he wanted to show that he is "as sound as a bell on the fundamental facts of the faith". This is in general borne out in what he writes. He vigorously defends the virgin birth, the deity of Christ, his death and resurrection. He also explores what these facts mean, showing their significance. He writes in a direct, no nonsense style seeking to confront us with the truth.
Occasionally Mr Pawson expounds some novel views such as that Jesus died on the Wednesday and that when we receive our resurrection bodies we will be aged 33. His charismatic and pre-millennial views also colour what he says. For this reviewer this meant that there were quite a few points with which he could not agree.
However if we take to heart his own command in the introduction to compare everything that he writes with scripture and if there is a conflict to always rely on the clear teaching of the Bible, then this can be a helpful book. Mr Pawson certainly will make you think more deeply about the wonder of the birth, death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus.
