“Hey Brett, you there.”

“Yes Michael, I’m here. What’s going on?”

“OK. We just left the doctor’s office. I’m just going to say it because I don’t know how to do this (he begins to break down, then regains his composure). The doctor ran a stat MRI and found two more tumors. They are in your mother’s brain. They are taking her to radiation right now.” He begins to break down again.

Silence.

Michael regains his composure, “Brett, Brett are you still there?”

(Choking down tears) “Yea Michael, I’m here.”

Have you ever had a moment like this? Where life becomes so real, so raw? A sudden disaster, catastrophe, diagnosis and your world is rocked forever. For me this one came way too soon. My mom was only 76 years old and seemingly full of life. Five days after Michael’s call, a PET scan revealed ten total tumors throughout her body and only months to live.

In the Bible, we see James trying to figure out what life is all about in the eyes of God and eternity. He writes, “What is your life? You are a mist that is here for a little while then vanishes.” The apostle Peter also tries to gain perspective of our time on this earth. He writes, “With the Lord a day is like a thousand years and a thousand years are like a day.” His point is simple, for every day in heaven, a thousand years on earth pass by. I did the math and what I found was astonishing; one second in heaven is roughly one hundred years on earth. Your life, a mere mist, gone in one second from the perspective of eternity.
