Prophet of the People

San Giovanni Rotondo used to be a remote Italian village. Today it is seen as a spiritual mecca for millions of people, radiating a renown comparable to that of Assisi and at times bustling with a pilgrimage-like atmosphere not unlike that of Fatima or Lourdes. One man changed this village’s atmosphere, his name was Padre Pio.

Prophet of the People tells the story of a Capuchin priest, Padre Pio. From 1918 until his death in 1968, Padre Pio bore the stigmata, the wounds of Christ in his flesh. Miracles attributed to him have given rise to the hope that, following his beatification in May 1999, he will soon be canonized a saint.
