“Cauliflowers fluffy and cabbages green
strawberries are sweeter than any I've seen
beetroot purple, onions white”
For many, the words of that song will stir up memories sitting in assembly on school gym floors, scuffed from plimsolls and peeling tape. In which case, my apologies if it’s now stuck in your head for the rest of the day. For me, it reminds me of celebrating Harvest Festival. Harvest Festival is a celebration of food grown on the land. It’s an ancient and worldwide celebration. In Britain, we celebrate this day by singing, praying and many decorate their churches or schools with baskets of fruit and tinned food. It’s a reminder to Christians of all the good things given to us by God. It also serves as an opportunity to share with others who are less fortunate. Many Churches and schools hold collections for good as part of their Harvest Festival service. This food is then put on display following the service before being made into parcels and given to those in need. Harvest Festivals are normally celebrated in September or October, in line with the Harvest Moon. This year, the Harvest Moon appeared in the skies on September 6th. Will your Church be celebrating Harvest this year? What is Harvest Festival?
When is Harvest?
