We have received the following appeal from Liz Patten for support for CLC’s bookshops mission in Mozambique and Swaziland.
I am wondering if any of you in the trade can help me. In a nutshell, I am searching for good condition second-hand shop fittings and office furniture which
could be donated for CLC Mozambique and CLC Swaziland; essentially for three bookshops in total:
a) Maputo, Mozambique - where our fittings and our stock are being destroyed by termites
b) Beira, Mozambique - where we have no fittings of our own and are using borrowed bookshelves
c) Manzini, Swaziland - where we have re-located to a new retail unit but are still using old shelves, some of which I literally had to repair on my visit in January.
Once I have secured sufficient donated shelving (for bookshop displays AND stockroom supplies) and some office furniture (desks, chairs + one or two filing cabinets) and have raised a minimum of £5000 for the cost of a container + shipping + customs clearance, I plan to send the whole lot to Mozambique where I will meet up with it in person.
If there are any shops either closing or relocating/downsizing and would be willing to give away fixtures to a great cause I would love to hear from them. I would like our shops in Mozambique & Swaziland to have an appearance that we can be proud of.
If anyone is able to help Liz with this project she would love to hear from you. Please contact her on 07704 823402 or by email at [email protected] and let’s help our friends and colleagues in Africa.
