Hillsong – Let Hope Rise is an excellent combination of a behind the scenes, documentary about Hillsong United and as they call it a theatrical worship experience.
This documentary film follows the Australian Christian band, Hillsong United as they get ready to play a large live worship event, whilst in the process of writing songs for a new album. It chronicles the beginnings and unlikely rise of the band and also Hillsong Church, and gives us a glimpse into the hearts and the lives of the band members and the reason why they do what they do. With performances of their songs mixed throughout the film.
Hillsong United and the film makers have called this a new motion-picture genre, a theatrical worship experience and this is what they hope to achieve, to see and hear cinema goers worshiping God whilst watching the film. This is even encouraged with the beginning of the film telling you to be free to join in, the words to the songs are also on screen, and really when watching this, you can’t help but join in, you can’t help but worship God. So yes this is a theatrical worship experience and perhaps we can expect more of these, live worship events at the theatre, that have the potential to impact the hearts and lives of many people.
It is also great to sneak behind the scenes, to see that these band members are ordinary people like you and I who face the same daily life struggles, you get a glimpse into what God has called them to do and why they do it – to get people to discover Jesus. May this be an encouragement to you, that God can use you no matter who you are. They share about their lives, their family, their situations and you see that these people are humble people, they want you to know that this isn’t about them, it’s about Jesus.
One of the highlights of this film is the compilation of people from around the world, different ages, different languages, different places, all singing Mighty to Save, a song that is an anthem for many.
Overall Hillsong – Let Hope Rise is a fantastic documentary but it is more than that, it is what they set out to achieve – a theatrical worship experience. This film will have you singing along, worshipping God, it has the potential to change lives and will point people to Jesus.

We are currently in a strange situation. Bible sales are up, but the number of people reading the Bible is going down. Even stranger, this situation is nothing new. There has always been a difference between the number of people who own a Bible and the number of people who regularly read their Bibles.
