John Leach has been a lab technician, parish priest, Director of Anglican Renewal Ministries, Diocesan staff member and a truck driver in his time. The latter role is an important one in the context of this book giving him an opportunity to see the church and religion through the eyes of those with no connection to God or faith. He likens much of his journey through life as a series of ‘upgrades’ provided by God’s ‘Research and Development Engineer’ – the Holy Spirit – which, just as with our computer software, we can choose to download and accept or ignore. There are many highs and lows in his story, including being out of a (ministry) job on three occasions, being diagnosed with mouth cancer and then being ‘dis-appointed’ from his dream job. Through all the ‘desert times John never gave up on God although he often wondered where He was. There is much humour in this book as well and encouragement for us facing tough times.
