Joy Denny and her team from The Word, Bedford wanted to do something for their local community during the lead up to Christmas. Taking inspiration from the Messy Nativity (BRF) book they worked with three local churches along with 30 shops on their street to create an advent sheep trail. Hand-knitted woolly sheep were placed in local shops or businesses.
A local lower school have supported The Word bookshop to encourage children and families to participate in finding the sheep. Each of the sheep had their own name and children visited the shops with their lists, which had the nativity story on the back, and filled in the name of the sheep. The prize for finding the names of all the sheep was a Bible story book published by Lion Hudson paid for by the churches.
The sheep trail finishes in January with Sunday tea at church for all those involved – including the knitters and local shops.
